Michael Douglas and Matt Damon are filming “Behind the Candelabra”, a book written by Liberace’s longtime lover Scott Thorson, a film for HBO and the pictures are leaking out from the set.
Production began on the Steven Soderbergh film on July 16. Filming will also be done in Palm Springs and Las Vegas.
Total films reports that Dan Aykroyd plays Liberace’s long-time manager who was NOT happy with his relationship with Thorson. Love that Rob Lowe plays the plastic surgeon who molds Thorson’s face to resemble Liberace’s. Debbie Reynolds will play Liberace’s mother Frances.
Thorson and Liberace met when Thorson was just 17, and Liberace was 57 in 1976. They soon became a couple and Thorson eventually became such a part of Liberace’s life he even would join him onstage in Las Vegas. Thorson sued Liberace after they had a very bitter and public breakup for an astounding $113 million! The movie follows Liberace’s years with Thorson, the breakup and the drama through the reconciliation in 1987 in Liberace’s final days.
Liberace was one of the highest paid performers in Vegas. People Magazine said in 1982 “He has realized the dreams of a most common man. His Las Vegas act, concert tours and records (60 million sold to date) have brought him an average gross income of $5 million for each of the last 30 years, and he has worked his bejeweled tails off to make it so. In his portfolio are many mansions (three in Las Vegas alone), pianos (18 at latest count, including Chopin’s and Gershwin’s), cars (20, two of them Rollses), gems (he wears about $3 million worth onstage and has one $35,000 Tiffany watch that plays his theme song, “I’ll Be Seeing You”), furs (including a $150,000 black diamond mink coat lined with Austrian rhinestones), antiques (don’t ask) and real estate. … All this from leaving the classical piano repertoire for what he has called ‘the happiness side of music.”
Douglas’ part of Liberace is certainly a far cry from “The Streets of San Francisco”, and Damon’s from the “Bourne Identity” Series but they will be spectacular!
