Olympians heroically broke numerous historical records and barriers during the Games this summer held in London.
Standout Olympians this summer included: Usain Bolt, Misty May-Treanor, Kerri Walsh Jennings, Gabby Douglas and Michael Phelps.
One athlete that has defied the odds and “the norm” is the glorified Jamaican Usain Bolt. Usain Bolt is considered the fastest man on Earth, and maybe one of the best athletes of all time, because of his historical triumphs. He made his mark in history when he won the 100 and 200 meters in consecutive Olympics. Bolt is the first sprinter to accomplish this task. Additionally, he crushed record race times, both summer seasons. As an added bonus, Bolt and his teammates, won first place in the 4 * 100-meter relay race, and broke the existing world record time!
The Beach Volleyball Queens,Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings, won their third straight gold medal, during this year’s Summer Olympics. After winning first place, in the birthplace of the Olympic games, Athens, they went on to win gold in Beijing, in 2008. The Golden Girls ended their team’s career, on an all American stage, in London.
Gabby Douglas, as known as the flying squirrel, also made history this Olympic season, and will be returning to the States with a couple gold medals! This young gymnast, who adorably smiles from ear to ear, assisted her American team, a.k.a. “The Fierce Five” to win a team gold medal. Moreover she also made a personal achievement, by winning the all-around gold medal! Gabby Douglas is the first black gymnast to win gold, for “all around in gymnastics”. At only 16, Gabby has made so many achievements, and now the world can only wait to see what this young leader will accomplish next.
27-year-young, Michael Phelps is an Olympian that will be written in the history books, as well as in the Olympic records, for becoming the most decorated Olympian in history. He has won 22 medals, in his Olympic career, which includes three summer seasons, and 18 career Olympic gold medals, as well as two silver and two bronze medals. He won gold in his final competition this summer.
