Urban Outfitters Inc. has just agreed to a new distribution and marketing plan with World Co. Ltd to open new Free People locations across Japan. The outlined plan has Free People opening shops in classic Japanese department stores such as Isetan and Takashimaya. Along side this Free People will be opening its own store and showroom inside of the Shibuya district over the next six months.
The idea behind this new arrangement is to begin expanding the company into the booming Asian market.
“It’s our first international move,” Meehan said. “This is an important step for the Free People brand in opening up the Asian markets. It’s going to be instrumental to other countries such as China and Korea in that region.” – Krissy Meehan (Managing director of Wholesale).
Free People has been a long lived thriving business with over 50 brands and 2,700 store locations. Since the quantity is already so large the strategy is to open a few more select locations in the Asian market and to take the customers experience to a new level inside while they shop.
“We launched our first shop-in-shop at Nordstrom in Seattle and opened one at Bloomingdale’s [59th Street flagship],” Meehan said. “Customers can experience the true Free People. You have to put the brand together under the Free People aesthetic.”
With the push into the thriving Asian market this will no doubt lead to great things for the Free Peoples future.
